What makes a blog a blog?
We're not seeking An Answer but working with the question. Two non-answers: "It's up to the blogger.", and "Who Knows?"
Genre. Public writing. Ergodic space. Technologies. Or something as mundane as Frequently updated and reverse chronological order.
Personal learning space. Literature-like. Commonplace book. Social.
Rettberg, Blogging chap 1.
You probably already have some idea of what a blog is, but, if you're like most of us, your concept of "blog" may be skewed by the kinds of blogs that you have read or that you have read about in the media.
If we see blogs as a medium, then the formal definitions are sufficient. These are the material limitations of blogs. An online newspaper or company newsletter may well choose to use blogging software as a medium. However, if we ^ see blogs as a genre, or, as Ryan puts it, as a 'type of text', then our definition should include mention of the typical style and content that lets us at a glance say 'that's not a blog' when we see an online newspaper.
... Williams's alternative, 'frequency, brevity and personality', does describe the gist of blogging. The first two points describe formal qualities: blogs consist of frequent, relatively brief postings. The third is a question of style and context: blogs are personal. They are usually written by indi- viduals and present an individual's subjective view of- or log of - the Web, their life or a particular topic. Even company blogs tend to be written by an individual or a small group of individuals, as we will see in chapter 6. Blogs are generally written in the first person. In addition to being a first-person form of writing, blogs are social.

The novel, as Watt, Gallagher, and others have argued, is defined as much in how readers are trained to enter its shared codes as it is by the specific delivery of those codes. Likewise, the weblog relies on particular codes enacted by both author and readers—readers who become, in this case, secondary authors."

The question is how well does it export to wiki markdown. It looks close, but will need trying.
Might be pretty good for that as I move materials and notes from where ever they are (nvALT, DT, Notebooks) to create a document. Once drafted - and Ulysses makes it easy to draft - it can be moved to the wiki for final work: cleaning up links, images etc.
The virtue is this: It's easier to flip between notebooks and Ulysses than it is to flip between notebooks and the wiki editor. The Ulysses editor is more stable than a web interface.

eval of week using your reflections
reflections: strategies
http://jessejamesati.wordpress.com/2013/01/27/reflections-week-two/. Jessie's is a guide to his posts this week. He gives an OV and separates out the links. But he made good use of the heuristic questions: substantial if brief, conversational, and leading forward in the last paragraph.
http://jackrtuthill.wordpress.com/2013/01/26/bootcamp2013-an-unforgettable-thought-provoking-exhausting-educational-trip-worth-taking/
I have decided to finish my weekly summary a tad earlier than usual because I have loads of other homework and this post is the most important. I am not 100% sure how these weekly summaries are supposed to look, but here goes.
Detailed, linked, thorough - longer, more casual but rewards reading. Totally in control of his work.
http://thismattisblogging.wordpress.com/2013/01/27/week-two-review/
little more formal - takes up and continues an issue that got started this week:. This is not just a summary but he's extending his thinking about the topic -
I do not own the apparatus which creates my blog, but its appearance and shifting content is my own choice. There is no final product with a blog. I get to constantly choose what is the final presentation of my thought, right? Though a post is just that, a final published thought, so there is not clear line for me here. Beyond that, the audience is much wider, varied, and yet for the duration of this course I am being graded and I am aware of that. I also know that I am being pushed to create. Random attempts, thoughts, and potential failures are pushed for in this course structure, that is the key difference between my usual university approach and the rigor of my course driven blogging.
Interesting move is dropping the links in as examples -
I find myself much more willing to be generally reflective on what I feel I know rather than academically as sure as I can be with respected sources. For instance, my post on IP, CC, and copyright law was based on wide net of Google searches, educated guesses as to respectable sources (the Creative Commons website was a no brainer), and a post which utilized my “sources” and dredged up my understanding of copyright law. That is not my normal approach. Usually I would have taken the time to look over my MLA publisher’s guide for any issues with my understanding, yet I didn’t do that here for a piece which has the potential to be seen by a much wider audience than an instructor.
and in doing that, of course, influencing how I evaluate the work. That is, Matt places his work in the context that *he* defines, saying, "These are examples - and here's how I want you to interpret them, as evidence of
"I find myself much more willing to be generally reflective on what I feel I know rather than academically as sure as I can be with respected sources."
I am noticing responses and I'm letting myself be influenced by those responses.
I'm only following what you link to and remark on in your reflection. If you can't be arsed to remark on it, why should I? So I am being influenced by links. I'm giving my attention those posts that give their attention to their work.
Pass Bootcamp if you have a 70 or better. Below that, you might want to review stuff, or consider moving on.

from Nick Carbone via techrhet
Ironically, I think this trend makes blogging more valuable in the
curriculum. That is, because it's not a form/tool a lot of young
writers take up by choice, nor a technology favored by the young, it's
different enough to be useful in a different way than using tools
--tweets, sms -- that are more a given. The essay, a form most people
don't choose to write (and the kind of writing you can do in a blog),
has value because it asks for a different way of thinking than most
beginning writers are used to if their default writing habit is the
text message, the tweet, and Facebook update.
So along e-mail, another old person thing, we add blogs. I'm sure in
ten years, the things teens/early-twentiers find hip now will be for
old people too.
And it's not like blogs are less relevant per se over all; it's just
that their uses and purposes might be shifting as young writers find
other ways and tools to say who they are and what they think.

**Some practice in reading and collaborating**
Every member of the group: read Wide Open Spaces and add notes to your group notes page for Weds 22 Jan
- The lead notetaker for today should summarize the reading in a paragraph or two at the top of the page.
Everyone should contribute
- The ideas you want to take with you. You can quote or paraphrase, but explain the reasons why these bits are significant to you.
- Implications for you as a student/writer/freelancer/ a content creator in whatever area you're in.
- Examples: See if you can find more examples or counter examples of what Lamb discusses and link to them.
Use headings to sketch out a rough organization for the page. Everyone help out everyone else: add material, respond to material.
Don't leave this until the last minute. You might want to approach it a couple of times over the next five days.
