Hypertext in Kitzmann

With hypertext we're looking at what is happening right now, day by day, and if we're unaware of it, it's because we're still lounging around in old fashion WP as print days.

A poor q is why hasn't it taken off? But the reading of it has, w the web. Writing hasn't caught up.

Hypertext should be of special interest to would be editors. Kitzmann Covers systems, people, paradigms. Htext as reading is still forming. We're in the incunabula state: early printed books.

Kitzmann is doing media archeology by investigating developers claims to charactetize the technology.

Hypertext Systems

Memex becomes intimate with researcher's interests. StorySpace becomes a colleague and friend. 21

Both are cast as spaces rather than surfaces. Esp story space et al.

Idea of htext and psyche
  • Association
  • Htext as new paradigm 17
    • Of thinking
    • Of organizing

As a Universal system 25

We've seen this before w heim characterizing organization. The htext idea is that its universal system reflects, mirrors, facilitates the True way that the mind and communication work. Print is linear. The mind is associative. Etc.

how technology shapes us and who benefits 26ff as bias of hypertext

Addresses and leads to idea that htext transforms in particular ways - that the evolution is highly ideological, and is framed as running counter to capitalist hegemony.

Chap 2: Uses of hypertext

Literary htext

M Amerika. Filmtext. The work is about the actions, experiences, and impressions of readers. And Kitzmann's reflection on the work: that it is a long way from book-bound literary conventions. 42. Lets talk about what that means. \

hypertext in gaming and interactive game stories

Ks end in this section is to argue that htext is egodic and sign-making rather than sign-reading. Cf literary hypertext

The main issue is that htext is seen as poor cousin to traditional literature. Choices do not lead to depth that can be enveloped by literature in the hands of pros in the canon. 57

Problem with that position is that it is using a literary paradigm to consider a paradigmatic alternative. Measured by traditional lit ideas, hypertext games makes for blasé lit. But they are GAMES, not lit.

In games, the focus is on gameplay, not story. The story is secondary to the gameplay. Ex Dear Esther. Her. In both, gameplay choices determine the narrative - what is told in what order by whom. The end is the same, so the interest and engagement lies w the ways in which the narrative is released.

immersion and engagement

Argues that hypertext writers can draw on ideas from gaming and lit to design texts that are as or more engaging than at present.

hypertext is essentially ergodic

User confronts htext by way of an interface, and reads it by manipulating the very apparent and procedural interface. Reads but also uses it for sign-making. Htext provides an alternative sign-generating system than traditional text. "One must actively engage with the mechanisms of the medium ... to get at its content." 65

hypertext as a spacial medium

"that is predicated on materialized navigation and exploration. ... that 'material' nature of the system used to grant access to thus space must be considered as integral to the 'content' contained within." 65

this demands transparency of the interface - which has to be understood before the experience can become immersive or engaging.
