M Amerika. [[http://www.markamerika.com/filmtext/ | Filmtext]]. The work is about the actions, experiences, and impressions of readers. And Kitzmann's reflection on the work: that it is a long way from book-bound literary conventions. 42. Lets talk about what that means.

Both are //cast as spaces rather than surfaces//. Tinderbox and StorySpace, esp. This shifts understanding of writing
- from inscription to topology
- from syntax to adjacency and distance
- from sequence to relative spatial placement: next to, far from, above, below ...
As a Universal System 25
We've seen this before with Heim, in characterizing organization. The hypertext idea is that its universal system //reflects, mirrors, facilitate//s the True Way that the mind and communication work. Print is linear. The mind is associative. Etc.
Wiki makes manifest most of the features Kitzmann mentions.
Missing features of the web
- backlinks
As above, exemplified by wiki.
In this section, Kitzmann argues that hypertext is //ergodic and sign-creating rather than sign-reading//. Cf literary hypertext
A problem with that position is that it is using a literary paradigm to consider a paradigmatic alternative. Measured by traditional lit ideas, hypertext games makes for blasé lit. But they are GAMES, not lit.

Additions:
=== Literary hypertext===
Kitzmann's end in this section is to argue that hypertext is ergodic and sign-creating rather than sign-reading. Cf literary hypertext
The main issue is that hypertext is seen as poor cousin to traditional literature. Choices do not lead to depth that can be enveloped by literature in the hands of pros in the canon. 57
User confronts hypertext by way of an interface, and reads it by manipulating the very apparent and procedural interface. Reads but also uses it for sign-generating. Hypertext provides an alternative sign-generating system than traditional text. "One must actively engage with the mechanisms of the medium ... to get at its content." 65
This demands transparency of the interface - which has to be understood before the experience can become immersive or engaging.
