Notes on Redesigning the Book

Each reading brings out aspects of reading and books that we can consider in looking at redesigns.


Reading is a material act. We can question experience to investigate the impact of media on reading

Reading is a cultural act. Takes place in cultural institutions. New reading practices are hyperextensions of existing cultural practices.

This reads as a set of notes and observations. As such, it is useful in re-desiging the codex as aspects you'll have to work with: text flow, columns or not, legibility. and most importantly The idea of The Author was created - or made ripe to create - by the printed codex.

Reading is learned

Mention of three modes of reading: grazing, browsing and hunting - none of which readily transfers to reading on screen.

book as portal is that it undermines the reading experience even as it augments it. Reading is linear and requires concentration. A portal link takes the reader away from the author's linear design and focuses his or her attention on other text.

Who's going to do this? Authors? Publishers? whoever makes the decisions, they are going to involve institutional and cultural interests even as we re-imagine.
