All in all I think my project turned out well because I did meet the goals I set in my proposal, and I made the suggested changes to my wiki to make it more readable and to make it look better.

Another thing I changed was going from one long page to many pages on my wiki. My professor asked me during my presentation why I hadn't created more pages and linked them together, and I didn't really have an answer. I think my first intention was to get all of the information I found right away, and then I forgot to break the information up onto other pages so I wouldn't lose any readers because they got bored from reading all of the information.
I also added pictures to each page except the video page to try and break up the text and white space on each page, especially the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/ ASL History]] page because there is a lot of text on white space and I realized it got a bit overwhelming. I also thought that it would spice up the pages a bit because the background is kinda plain with just the white.

Additions:
I added the comments page for people to add any information that they wanted, or add comments about the material they read. I also added the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Comments_Page Comments Page]] because I was told in a studio tour done by [[http://ferret.bemidjistate.edu/WeblogsAndWikis/blogsandwikis.php?wakka=StudioTourPulkrabek Charles Pulkrabek]] that I didn't have one yet. Charles's comment was a reminder for me because I had been meaning to I just forgot. However, my wiki does allow people to add comments at the end of each page, but I thought that was a bit lame. I wanted the comments to be on its own page because it would give people free rein into added there own information, and then editing it as they saw fit. I also thought it would be interesting to see what people might do to each others comments, if I didn't delete any of the information.
====More Time====
One thing I would do differently is spend more time researching information to put on my wiki. I would also spend more time adding information to my wiki, like four to five times a week like I said I would instead of the two or three times a week that I did.
I found that the researching information was difficult. It took a lot of time to find articles with new information because many of the articles I found had the same information in each article. I also found that I couldn't spend hours researching information because I had lots of homework form my other classes to complete as well. If I had to do this project over again I would schedule my time better so I could fit researching in with the rest of my homework.
====Developing Sections====
Another thing I would to different is spend time developing every section equally instead of completing the history section first. I think if I would have developed each section equally there would be more links on the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Links_for_ASL Links for ASL]] page. I think I would also have more information on the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Interesting_pieces_of_History Interesting History]] page because I'm sure there is more interesting history that relates to sign language.
I think I would also add a famous deaf person section, and look up famous people. People who had been famous and deaf in the past like Helen Keller or Laurent Clerc, and people who are deaf and famous now like Shelly Beattie or Kenny Walker. Beattie and Walker are athletes.

=====My Project Choice=====
=====What I Planned=====
=====What I Changed and Why=====
====Things Changed====
====Things Added====
I added the music + ASL page because I was browsing on youtube.com one day trying to find videos that showed sign gestures for words and phrases when I stumbled upon a video of a guy signing to the song //Mr. Brightside// by The Killers, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6DR7Osrt9A Mr. Brightside Signed]]. I was amazed by the video and I decided to add it to my wiki along with some other videos. I added the videos to show people how fluent with the language they can become if they practice a lot, and I wanted the videos to encourage people to learn the language. I also added the videos because people listen to music and I figured they would be able to connect with the language when they see it associated with music. I also added videos because I thought they were cool, and I thought other people would too. My favorite video is [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BGfO693pME Womanizer]] by Britney Spears because I thought the guy signing in the video was so enthusiastic about signing the song, which was one thing I looked for while choosing videos. I felt I needed to find people who were getting into the music because they would draw people in instead of someone just sitting in front of a web cam signing. I also chose three guys and three girls signing because I wanted men and women to relate to someone of their sex signing.
=====What I Learned=====
I learned a lot while doing my research for this project. I learned that sign language has been around for a long time, it's even mentioned in the Bible. I learned that ASL owes its creation to only a few men, but the person who really brought sign language to the Americas was Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. He was a minister in who traveled to London to study sign language because he wanted to communicate with his neighbors daughter. While in London he met a man named Laurent Clerc who was deaf himself, but was going to school to learn how to teach sign language. Together they created a language that would fit the children of America, and ASL was born. Of course my [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/ ASL History]] page goes into greater detail. I also learned that the languages of the world are evolving into a universal language called Gestuno or the International Language.
I found that Gestuno is being created because no sign language is the same. Sign language is as different as any speaking language because each language has its own grammar, syntax, and rules to the language. I found that people don't really understand the difference between each language, and the only way I found to explain the difference was to compare two spoken languages like French and German. Each language is different from the spelling of words, sounds of words, and style of words. That is what sign language is like, each gesture means something different in a different language. There is even a difference between West Coast ASL and East Coast ASL.

Additions:
In my proposal I had planned to create four sections on my wiki, and I was going to add information to the wiki three to four times a week. The four sections I was going to create were: a history section [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/ ASL History]], a different sign language section [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Alphabet_Charts Alphabet Charts]], a link section [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Links_for_ASL Links for ASL]], and a frequently asked question section [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/index.php?title=Question_%26_Answer Question & Answer]].
The history section would discuss how sign language was started, and how it evolved through time. I also wanted to find information that explained why the language was started.
The different sign language section was going to discuss the difference between ASL and the other sign languages in other countries. I wanted to see if there were major differences between the languages or subtle differences.
The link section would have links to sites that would have videos of sign gestures for people to learn from, like [[http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro.cgi ASLpro.com]], or [[http://www.expertvillage.com/video-series/2220_sign-language-phrases.htm Expert Village]].
The frequently asked question section would have questions that someone might ask while either learning sign language, or thinking about learning sign language.
=====What I changed or added and Why=====
One of the big things I decided not to do was research different sign languages. I had found through my research that there are many different sign languages, and I decided it would have been too much for me to research a few of the other languages because there were too many to choose from. I also felt that if I would research other languages it would take the focus away from the ASL, and I didn't want that to happen because well I was creating the wiki to discuss ASL not another language. So, to keep the section I found alphabet charts from ASL and different languages to show the difference between the languages, and I found a site that has a list of all the different sign languages that exist. The site doesn't really have a name, but it is a site that spans out from Wikipedia.com. I decided to call the site on the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Alphabet_Charts Alphabet Charts]] page was [[http://groups.google.com/group/languesignes/web/sign-language-list-from-wikipedia List of Sign Languages]].
Another thing I changed was to include other wikis about sign language on the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Links_for_ASL Links for ASL]] page. I didn't put many on the page because I wanted my readers to stay on my wiki, but I thought it would be helpful for readers to find other wikis that might show different information about ASL. One wiki was called [[http://wapedia.mobi/en/Sign_language Wapedia]]. Of course the granddaddy of all wikis is Wikipedia and I found the page about [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_language sign language]].
I added three other pages to my wiki. The first is the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Comments_Page Comments Page]], the second is the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/Interesting_pieces_of_History Interesting History]] page, and the third is the [[http://hmhansen588.wik.is/index.php?title=Music_%2b_ASL Music + ASL]] page.
I added the comments page for people to add any information that they wanted, or add comments about the material they read. My wiki does allow people do add comments at the end of each page, but I thought that was a bit lame. I wanted the comments to be on its own page because it would give people free rein into added there own information, and then editing it as they saw fit. I also thought it would be interesting to see what people might do to each others comments, if I didn't delete any of the information.
I added the interesting history page because during my research I had found information about an island that was almost completely deaf, but because that information didn't relate to the development of ASL it didn't belong on the ASL history page. I also thought that it would add more varity to my wiki if I would find more interesting information relating to sign language.
======Final Write Up On My Project======
Helen Hansen
=====I chose my project because...=====
The reason why I chose to do my project on the American Sign Language (ASL) was because I was learning it at my job. I found that I have a knack for the language and I wanted to learn more about it. I wanted to discover how and why the language started, and see how it developed through the years. I also wanted to find sites that would be helpful to me while learning the language.
I chose a wiki for my base of operations because I wanted an area where I could work. I wanted to be able to add information and clean up the information so it focused on the points I wanted to make about the ASL. I also chose a wiki because I was more familiar with it than a blog. I also thought a blog would be a nuisance because I would have to make a new entry for every piece of information that I found about the ASL.
