A
link to the site that the random website generator took me to.
- Page is mostly white with dark orange banners that contain a majority of the links.
- The top banner, the largest on the page, though still rather small, contains what appears to be a logo, the font is plain (and off center?) but it is clear this site is called "Compare Fruits".
- This is a page entitled, "Types of Fruits", made clear by a white box banner that is the next heading sized text below the top banner.
- Note that there is also a banner advertisement between the top navigation and the persistent navigation bar.
- Also note the option "Types of Fruits" is not one of the option in the primary navigation.
- By clicking around I found this is the page that appears when you click the Site ID on any given page, making this a confusingly named home page.
- The primary navigation is clearly defined by the orange box tabs underneath the Site ID banner.
- Notably the designer created too many options, and had to place the options on a left-to-right scroll bar, perhaps adding a convention that some users might find tedious, or ignore and miss the options that are hidden.
- The primary navigation is also persistent, staying in the exact same place no matter which option is chosen, or even going down to tertiary pages.
- Also, there is a menu option on the top left, conventionally placed with the three horizontal bars stacked vertically. When clicked, a portion of the p-nav options are given again in a vertical list of orange boxes, but now they have clickable dropdown options, the first of which is already open (to signal the options to the user), the options being a sample list of fruits (which are the secondary/tertiary pages on the site).
- This might be best examined on one of the lower pages in the hierarchy.
- Here we get an identical scrolling list of box tabs specific to this page, giving what I guess are tertiary options, but seem somewhat on the same level as the information just changes, not the page itself.
- There are no breadcrumb indicators of position in the site.
- The box tabs do not even change color to indicate which page you clicked on.
- There is a typical search tab in the top right corner, although has the phrase, "Search any Fruit" inside of it. As a new user this is somewhat helpful of an indicator, the search tab is not general, it is specific to this fruit oriented site.
- Keeping with the title "Compare Fruits", on the home page (and on every subsequent page) there are an additional two search bars below the page title.
- There are a lot of words surrounding these boxes, instructions, directions, and seemingly redundant buttons (there must be like four or five ways to make this thing search for fruits and compare them).
- However, the handy dropdown menus with pictures/names of fruits, also makes it clear what will happen when I hit "Pick the Best" even if that is a completely nonsensical way to say "Compare".
- However, I would not say that it is immediately self-evident.
