Why We Love Selfies

While selfies have become a new medium for self-expression and self-representation, it has been shown in past studies that photos contain valid personality-related cues. Selfies are able to give individuals more freedom of controlling their face visibility, emotional expression, and camera position. In turn, they also tend to provide a better view of their owners' personality traits than other photos, one article states. And with hundreds of photo challenges, selfie scavenger hunts, and selfie opportunities (no-makeup photos, etc.) it's no wonder the internet is booming with shared photos constantly.

Celeb Confessions

"This is not a complain, just sharing a little bit of my life. Sometimes, people question, that model life is easy, and that's wrong, we work as hard as any other individual. Today I had 10 hours of work day, shooting with a very bad cold, coughing no stop and a massive headache. That did not stopped me on doing what I love. I finished, went to airport, to comeback home to see my 2 princesses. Arriving there, my flight was over 3 hours delayed. I fly from NYC to Miami. Just waked home 2am. Happy to be here. And wanted to share the face of a hard working model, and share that I am not the only one that works this hard. Thank you. And I hope my message don't get misunderstand. Love u all." -- Adriana Lima

Student Confessions

"I like taking selfies because unlike school photos, you have the option of taking as many as you need to until you find one you like."

"It's easier at getting what you like in a photo, whether it your face, etc., and complimenting your features. People who don't necessarily see themselves as beautiful are able to make themselves feel beautiful by taking their own photos, as opposed to someone else taking a photo of you and you hating it. It's also just highlighting a different angle of you in general, which is beneficial to your self-esteem and acts as a confidence booster. " -- Sam Peterson

"I take selfies because they give me control. I hardly ever let people take pictures of me anymore because more often than not they turn out bad and I end up un-tagging myself from them. But when I'm holding the camera, I'm in control of the angle, the light, the pose, and I get to say when I click the button." -- Emily Keller

"It's a confidence booster overall. If you post a photo on Instagram and you get 100 likes, that's a great day right there." -- Adam Berg
