Wayne Schmeling

This is Wayne Schmeling from English 3179: Elements of Electronic Rhetoric, Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minnesota, U.S.A.

Have you ever had that feeling you've been here before...? Spring 2009 / Fall 2017....

I am a Senior, nontraditional college student pursuing the Creative and Professional Writing, B.F.A. with minors in Electronic Writing and History.

I was born and raised in Hutchinson, Minnesota, where the best parts of my childhood included family, fishing, camping, football baseball, friends, and rock and roll. As a traditional college student, I attended Minnesota State University, Moorhead (way back when it was just Moorhead State University), and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. I have since spent 18+ years in the outdoors retail industry which is what brought me to Bemidji in 2003 as part of the management team for Gander Mountain Co., and later as the firearms inventory control sales specialist with Reeds Sporting Goods in Walker, Minnesota. I started my return to college as a nontraditional student in Spring 2008, and now, in Fall 2017, I am here to settle a score and finish what I started.

I met my wife, Laura, in a game of Scrabble through Facebook in the summer of 2009. In February, 2012 we were married on a Maui beach. She is a multi-talented artist, a gardener, a fisher, an outdoors enthusiast, and a mother to our only son, Colter, who was brought to us by no small miracle in November, 2015. Colt is our pride and joy, and we couldn't have asked to have been blessed with a happier baby boy. Our extended family includes two dogs, Issey and Elley, and two cats, Buddy and Maisy. The dogs and I have a special bond. The cats just live with us.

When I can find myself in the outdoors, the dogs and I love to hike on a daily basis to stay in shape for the fall hunt. The entire family, including our son and dogs, loves to spend time in the boat, fishing for whatever will bite. Road tripping, camping, and hiking is another love of the entire family. But once in a while I'll find myself solo in a treestand in the silence of the woods. Colt's obvious adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors at his early age tells me the big game hunt will be a family sport in the near future as well.
