- Ward Cunningham
- Businesses didn't like open source wiki's
- Hypertext- links things together (like a footnote in a book).
- Tim Berners-Lee- worked for CERN, invented the world wide web, and html: (hypertext transfer protocal) 1989
  • set up so he and his colleges could share papers, also so that others could access read and edit them. The wiki is how he invisioned the world wide web, but it took till Ward Cunningham invented Wiki that his dream was realized. when it first started you needed special software to create webpages, and was hard to do.

Notes on how to operate Wiki

- Everytime you save a wiki page, wiki stores an electronic copy, so if you mess up you can rollback to the previous page.
- Wiki Words
  • if you type a wiki word, it turns into its own page and link. A wiki word consists of at least two words, with no spaces and capital letters at the start of each word. then wiki recognizes this and creates a link to a new page.
- Wiki's are not WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). you have to code everything while editing it to make it turn out the way you want. there are shortcuts to the code in the edit bar. H1 H2.. give you different size headings. B I U give you bold, italics, and underline codes.
- To save you click store on the bottom left size. this gives you what the page will look like to everyone else. to reenter the edit page yo double clik on the page and you enter the edit mode.
- there are no tabbing before paragraphs, leave one space between paragraphs then just start typing.
- to create bullets, hit the tab key, then - and then the space bar, then the next time you return you will have a bullet.
- if you want to create a like on the page to another site, put in two square brackets [[ then type the link in and hit the space key and type what you want the link to be called and close it with two more square prackets.
- to put an photo in put two {{ brackets in type image hit the space bar, then type scr=" put the link in then " and close it with two more brackets. if you want the image offset to right put
before the brackets and after or left
for left offset.
