=====Notes on Myers's Chap 3: Linking =====
Considering how bloggers use links

This chapter introduces a project for us to work with. In this chapter, Myers's presents a taxonomy for cataloging link strategies. We'll use the method Myers presents and develop his findings further. We'll add to his taxonomy and adapt as we need to.

For this project, you're re-creating Myers's study into how bloggers use links.

Myers looks at these aspects of linking

- Who links
- What do they link to
- What do they link with
- What does the link do

The last one is the interesting one but can only be addressed by considering the first three.

Meyers looks a a number of personal weblogs and catalogues his findings. F

For linking to, he finds that bloggers link to

- blogs
- websites
- mainstream media

For linking with, he looks at the link text, he finds these strategies:

- phrase, name, title, word or number, deictic expression, sentence, url, brand name, image, quotation
- keeping link text separate
- by giving a sample of text linked to
- incorporating linked text (word, clause, phrase)

What is the link doing is a matter of determining the relationship between the link context and the target. He finds that the link is used by the bloggers in these ways:

- to tell more
- to provide evidence
- to give credit
- to lead to action
- to solve a puzzle posed by the link text
- to tell us something different from the link text (as in irony, or creating a shift in text-context relation.)
- to create wit

The last two are the interesting ones rhetorically. We can bring in a large set of rhetorical figures in to consider how link text relates to the target.

Myers goes into the last way of linking in detail by bringing in Paul Grice's theory of cooperative principle and flouts. Read GriceOnFlouts.

=== Practice ===
When we detect the incongruity between the link text and the site, we're prompted to make sense of the flout, to see the link to the parody site as an //unstated proposition//: an //implicature//. That is, the flout creates an unstated attitude, valuation, or commentary.

It's our job, as e-rhetorical critics, to locate flouts and articulate the unstated proposition, to show when a flout is happening and how it works.

Locate two flouts of any kind from any website. Post them in the comments on this page. You'll need to copy and paste the text, including the link. Then explain how each flout works, and comment on the flout. Does it flout quality, quantity, relation, or manner? And what is the implicature, the unstated attitude, valuation, or commentary created by the flout?
