A modest but pragmatic, easy-to-hang-onto definition of rhetoric from Stoner and Perkins:

The art and science of creating and analyzing "messages that rely on verbal and nonverbal symbols that more or less intentionally influence social attitudes, values, beliefs, and actions." (6)

We'll start the class on Weds, 14 Jan, when I'll post materials and exercises for the first week. Expect to post your work to the wiki by Sunday evenings for feedback on Monday or Wednesdays. New material will appear on Wednesdays.

For the week of 14 Jan - 21 Jan: Getting Started

If you haven't already, please read the CourseStatement

We'll get set up on the wiki so you can start submitting notes for the class, and start working with the Stoner and Perkins text, Making Sense of Messages.

We'll start slow at first as everyone gets set up and familiar with the wiki and the course itself. Patience! Things will speed up in the next few weeks.

We'll compare notes on the RhetoricalMessagesExercise next Wednesday, 21 Jan. Meanwhile, read Stoner and Perkins, chap 2.
