A definition of rhetoric
Here's a fairly modest but pragmatic, easy-to-hang-onto definition of rhetoric from Stoner and Perkins:

The art and science of creating and analyzing "messages that rely on verbal and nonverbal symbols that more or less intentionally influence social attitudes, values, beliefs, and actions." (6)

  • Worktime in class. Attend. Take a few minutes to look over the project page RhetoricalVelocityAndTwitterProject to make sure that you're on track.
  • Should be completing collecting materials, composing some descriptions of the texts and circumstances, watching for patterns, and reviewing analysis materials appropriate to your work. Lo0k at Longaker; Sheridan et al; and other readings you've found. Don't use them all: Select which one or two opens up analysis. We are all using Sheridan for a conception of rhetorical velocity, recomposition, and recirculation.

  • Where are you? What are you finding so far? What's next?
  • Start to consider what you might need to construct to present your analysis : chart, tables, diagrams, map, or just a scroll through your wiki page. Start choosing examples that will illustrate your analysis.
