rhetoric: to persuade
rhetor: person who produces the rhetoric

exigence: something needs to be discussed, between speaker and audience
ex: the speaker wants people to be there, (time, date, place), audience wants a job. when these two things meet, something good can happen, they can both benefit. they have to meet in order for it to work

three types of discourse:
judicial: to make judgements on the past
deliberative: consider to the future
epideictic: to praise or blame, celebrate, in the present
