Rhetoric: study and practice of persuasion. it is necessary, can't be avoided or removed.
people need to rely on other people, accompish less as a whole by being destructive to each other.
persuasion is in everything we do.
Rhetorical analysis: study of how people can be and have been persuasive. we do this for two reasons:
  1. be better judges
  2. be better advocates
RA will not answer questions directly, but prepare us to answer questions thoughtfully

we as a whole are often uncertain about our actions and beliefs.
Relativism- belief that all beliefs are equally good and true
Nihilism- belief that nothing is good or true
both are unsustainable
much of our life is unknowable
